ROCKINGHAM WRITERS 2019 ANTHOLOGY

A young girl discovers something haunting her bedroom – her entire life!

Excerpt –

The scream echoed wildly around the room, bouncing off the baby-pink walls to ricochet out of my bedroom door and down the hallway. I panted heavily, on the point of hyperventilating, and my heart pounded against my ribcage in painful thuds. Sitting upright in bed, my eyes stared, stretched to their widest capacity in an effort to capture any movement in the corner. From what illumination filtered in, cast by the outside streetlamp, I saw a small crouched figure drag its warped and twisted form toward me.

‘Muuummmy!’ My scream tore from my throat and I clutched at the sheets under my chin.

My parents rushed in, closely followed by my two older brothers, all clothed in pyjamas and sporting bed hair. My father flicked on the light switch, throwing the area into brilliant colour.

‘What is it, sweetheart?’ Mum rushed to my side and pulled me, now sobbing violently, into her arms, while Dad moved to check my bedroom window.

‘A monster,’ I cried, pointing to the corner.

My older brother by five years, Brian, snickered at me. ‘There’s nothing here except this chair. Hey, Tom, maybe it’s a chair monster.’ My brothers laughed, pretending to be monsters.

‘That’s enough, you two,’ Dad scolded them.

‘You must have had a nightmare,’ Mum comforted me, brushing my curls off my brow and kissing me as I turned my tearful gaze to scan the room.
